By the numbers will be a weekly look at an area high school team, player or game with an emphasis on varying numbers that make them unique.
From Jan. 12-30, the Fairfield Lady Lions made school history by setting a new standard within their girls basketball program by obtaining a nine-game winning streak. Fairfield did so by earning six Southern Hills Athletic Conference victories and three wins away from the SHAC.
During the winning streak, the Lady Lions defeated SHAC foes Fayetteville, Manchester (twice), Ripley, West Union and Whiteoak, and out of the conference, the wins came against Clermont Northeastern, Paint Valley and Blanchester.
There were a total of 502 points scored by Fairfield during their winning streak, including 330 points from two-point field goals, 88 points via free throws and 84 points from 3-pointers. Those points came off 165 two-point baskets, 28 3-pointers and 88 free throw conversions, with FHS going 88-of-152, an average of nearly 58 percent from the free-throw line.

In three games, Fairfield had 20 or more two-point field goals, those coming with 20 against West Union and 22 each against Manchester (in their second meeting) and Paint Valley. The fewest two-point baskets made were 15, also on two occasions. Those came in the first win of the streak in home games versus Fayetteville and Manchester.
The first Manchester game saw junior Grace Shope gain her 1,000th career point in the third quarter, and later, she moved up to second place all-time in the FHS girls basketball scoring list with 35 points at Paint Valley.
Following the end of the nine-game winning streak on Thursday, Fairfield head coach Chad Hamilton spoke about the streak.
“I think during that stretch, our girls sort of figured out how to close out games, and that was good. I hope that helps us moving forward,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton mentioned the first 10 games of the season for the Lady Lions where they were 3-7, but they’ve earned their aforementioned 12th win.
The team had two seniors as part of their winning record in Abigail Newkirk and Carly Arnold, with both players contributing during the games. In the Lady Lions’ ninth win, Arnold knocked down three 3-pointers, including her first one against Whiteoak that made it a 10-0 score in the first quarter this past Monday night.
So as the streak came to a close with a loss on Thursday to Highland County and conference rival Lynchburg-Clay, here is a list of some interesting numbers collected from the nine straight wins:
