Michael Mangus makes Division I debut with NKU

DAYTON — Northern Kentucky University cross-country squads opened the 2014 season on Saturday, running in the Dayton Flyer 5K. The men's team took fifth (136 points) overall, with the women placing sixth (138 points).

For the men, Michael Mangus, a graduate of Fairfield High School, was the top individual finisher, placing eighth at 16:00.4 on the 5K course.

Mangus was a three-time Div. III State Qualifier in cross-country, placing fourth in the state his senior year at the 2013 State Cross-Country Championships. 

"The men did a good job," head cross-country coach Steve Kruse said. "They followed instructions very well when it came to strategy. Michael Mangus did a great job in his first collegiate race on what is notoriously a slow course. Izak Velasquez also ran a good race. He was not too far off form Michael at the one-mile mark."
