Matthew Mangus wins 2017 Ohio Classic; Lions win team championship

Thus far after three events for their 2017 season, the Division III No. 1 state-ranked Fairfield Lions are 3-0 overall, winning on Saturday morning at the 2017 Ohio Classic held at Hillsboro Liberty Park, and they did so in convincing fashion.
The Lions scored 25 points in their first-place win, and within those points it was Fairfield senior Matthew Mangus who was the overall winner of the event with a first-place time of 16:55, a pace of 5:27, in what were wet and soggy conditions following rainfall all evening the night before and some rainfall on Saturday morning.

Also in the cooler 55-degree conditions on Saturday in Hillsboro, Fairfield senior Noah Richmond was third place overall at 17:12. In all, the Lions had five of the Top 10 spots in the Ohio Classic, as junior Austin Setty was sixth with a time of 17:25 (5:37 pace), sophomore Ethan Davis placed seventh with a time of 17:52 (5:46 pace) and junior Bennett Hodson had an eighth-place finish with a time of 17:54 (5:46 pace).
Also in the Top 5, the boys race had Peebles senior Matt Seas in second place at 17:04, Ethan Wallis (Cedarville) in fourth at 17:17 and Trent Koning (Cedarville) in fifth place at 17:24.
The Lions saw senior Andrew Davis finish 13th with a time of 18:03 (5:49 pace), and freshman Cohen Frost was next in 14th place with a time of 18:13 (5:52 pace).
Junior Sam Buddelmeyer ended his race 21st overall with a time of 18:4, and freshman Blake Haines was 30th with a time of 19:23. There was also sophomore Gavin Campbell in 39th with a time of 19:51, while freshman Brant Haines had a time of 20:43 and freshman Gavin Cox finished with a time of 23:15.
For the Hillsboro Indians in the boys race of the Ohio Classic, they placed seventh overall (180 points) out of 12 teams. They were led by senior Justin Scott in 27th place overall at 19:17. Also for HHS, junior Bailey Lucarello was 32nd with a time of 19:33, and freshman Jonathan Hatfield finished 34th with a time of 19:35.
HHS freshman Scott Eastes was 49th with a time of 20:27 for a Top 50 finish, while junior Nathan Spencer had a time of 20:39, freshman Owen Ryan finished with a time of 24:35 and sophomore Jeffrey Beery tallied a time of 26:00.
The McClain Tigers finished in 10th place with 262 points as junior Reece Schluep was their top finisher in 28th place with a time of 19:18. Freshman Nathan Ernst was 50th with a time of 20:36.
Also for the Tigers, times included: sophomore Miles McMurry (23:07), freshman Paul Bliss (23:44), senior Seth Cross (24:59), sophomore Zane Bode (26:30), freshman Chance Lane (27:49), sophomore Matthew Milnes (28:51), senior Noah Scott (29:36) and freshman Nick Cunningham (31:44).
In the girls varsity race, the Fairfield Lady Lions were fourth with 103 points, followed by Hillsboro in sixth (148) and McClain didn’t score as a team as they didn’t have enough runners. Winning the girls event was Peebles junior Jenny Seas with a time of 19:36. The rest of the Top 5 included: Savannah Rhodes (Blanchester) in second at 22:02, Sophie Leto (Western Brown) in third at 22:07, Camryn Pickerill (Eastern Brown) in fourth at 22:17 and Olivia Gundler (Blanchester) in fifth at 22:21.
Results for Fairfield included freshman Morgan Richmond in sixth place with a time of 22:24, senior Chloe Barber in 14th with a time of 22:58 and also in the Top 20, junior Megan Gragg in 16th with a time of 23:54.
Also for FHS, senior Sarah Young was 40th with a time of 27:32, while sophomore Laynee Duffie had a time of 30:57 and sophomore Sarah Wuellner finished at 31:19.
The Hillsboro Lady Indians finished in sixth place with 148 points. Junior Molly McCreary led HHS with an 11th-place finish at 22:57. Senior Ellie Howland was 36th with a time of 26:04. Also for HHS, senior Emily Young finished 41st with a time of 27:34, sophomore Keeley Schurman finished in 42nd with a time of 27:34 and sophomore Alora Brown was 50th with a time of 30:15.
For the McClain Lady Tigers, their times included senior Natalie Cunningham in 45th with a time of 27:46. Also for MHS, sophomore Madison Beatty finished with a time of 34:41, followed by freshman Madison Binegar (39:01) and sophomore Summer Richards (39:02).
