Massie, Cox, Karnes earn All-Ohio honors
Three Highland County girls basketball players were selected to the Associated Press 2013-14 All-Ohio team this past week by a panel of media.
Leading the way was McClain junior Shania Massie, who was selected third-team All-Ohio in Division III.
Also earning All-Ohio honors were Fairfield senior Heather Cox as a special mention selection in Division IV, and MHS senior Tara Karnes, an honorable mention selection in Division III.
Massie (5-7), the District 14 Coaches Division III Player of the Year, averaged 17.4 points per game during the regular season, along with six rebounds, four steals and three assists per game.
The MHS junior scored 30-plus points in a game four times, including once in the postseason, as she scored 30 points in the district semifinals.
"Shania has worked extremely hard to get where she is," McClain head coach Jarrod Haines said earlier this year. "People have to understand the long hours she has spent in the gym, and all her hard work has paid off."

Karnes (6-0) was selected to the Division III honorable mention team. The MHS senior averaged 8.5 ppg and six rpg during the regular season.
She also averaged one block per game and recorded three double-doubles this season.
"Tara worked hard on her game this season and was a good senior for us this year," Haines said earlier this season.
Cox (5-11) scored 19.1 ppg this season, averaging a double-double, as she also tallied 14.8 rpg.
The senior surpassed not only 1,000 points for her career, but also set the Fairfield girls basketball career mark in all-time scoring.
"Heather has put up some incredible numbers over the past couple years, and it's because of the effort and commitment she put in outside the season," FHS head coach Chad Hamilton said. "I have never seen a rebounder like her. There were games where teams put one defender in front and one behind to the point we could not get the ball inside, and it's because of her offensive rebounding ability.
"She would still get 20-plus points, and she kept us in a lot of games by working on the boards. She deserves all the accolades, and she will be missed next season."
