Lions win boys SHL cross country championship

RIPLEY — The Fairfield boys cross country team are the Southern Hills League champions.
Amongst the tobacco fields of Brown County, the SHL cross country championships were held on a cool, but windy, Saturday morning at Ripley High School.
The Lions captured the league title, topping nine other schools for the championship as there is one lone league title for boys cross country.
Following the Lions were: 2, Fayetteville; 3, North Adams, 4, Lynchburg Clay; 5, West Union; 6, Manchester; 7, Ripley and 8, Eastern Brown. Peebles and Whiteoak did not field full teams.
Michael Mangus led the Lions and all other competitors with a first-place finish for the second consecutive year with a time of 16:51.
Mangus was followed by teammate, Blake Hildebrant, who finished second with a time of 17:11.
Also scoring for Fairfield were Wyatt Crothers, 8th place in 18:18; John Cain, 10th place, 18:20 and Dustin Willey, 16th place, 18:47.
Also competing were Brant Huff, 22nd; Matthew Leach, 31st; Jacob Dalton, 49th and Layne Irvin 56th.
Named to the All-SHL team were Mangus, Hildebrant, Crothers and Cain.
On the girls side, Kaitlin Evans led the Lady Lions with a first-place finish with a time of 22:37.
Also scoring were Brenna Simmons, 16th; Heather Cox, 20th; Haley Bobb, 35th; Shelby Smithson, 36th. The Lady Lions finished fifth overall behind Fayetteville, Whiteoak, Ripley and Manchester.
Named to the All-SHL Team was Kaitlin Evans.
The teams will be competing at the District Championships next Saturday, Oct. 22 at the University of Rio Grande. The Fairfield boys are the top seed in the district meet.[[In-content Ad]]
