Lions upend Mustangs for SHAC win

The Fairfield Lions put nine runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, leading to a 10-6 win over Highland County rival Lynchburg-Clay to open the Lions’ 2015 season.

The Lions (1-0, 1-0) collected just three hits and committed 11 errors in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference game, but still, the fourth inning was the catalyst to their victory. LC finished with five hits and three errors.

Headed into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions trailed 6-1 to their Highland County rival, but after the nine runs in their half of the inning, it was FHS who led by the eventual 10-6 final score.

Gaining hits for FHS were Randy Lamme, Mason Cain and Jacob Bowman. The FHS runs were scored by Klay Walker (two), Cody Gragg, Lamme, Tucker Ayres, Hunter Dixon, Cain, Nike Groves, Mitchell Rose and Bowman.

Bowman and Dixon led the Lions with two RBIs each. Lamme, Cain, Rose and Walker each had one RBI. Walker was also hit by a pitch twice in the win, while Lamme and Dixon were each also hit by a pitch.

Ayres led the Lions with three walks, and Rose followed with two. Dixon and Groves each drew one walk.

FHS left six runners on base.

Dixon was the winning pitcher, as he made the start for FHS. Dixon allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks. He struck out two of the 23 total batters he faced (73 pitches).

Gragg pitched three innings of relief for FHS. Gragg (45 pitches) allowed one unearned run on one hit and no walks. He struck out one batter, facing 14 on the day.

The loss sends the Mustangs to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the SHAC.
