Lions top Green Devils at VA Memorial Stadium

CHILLICOTHE — Making what has turned into an annual trip to the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, the Fairfield Lions returned to Leesburg with a Southern Hills League win, defeating the North Adams Green Devils, 8-7 Monday evening.

The Lions had two 3-run innings and one 2-run inning for their eight total runs, while NA compiled a one 3-run and two 2-run innings for their runs.

FHS opened the game with their first 3-run inning as Cody Bennett, Blake Hildebrant and Kyle Carson all scored runs.

The first inning began with Bennett drawing a walk and scoring on a double by Hildebrant. Carson reached the bases on an error, moving Hildebrant to third. Hildebrant scored on a ground out by Zach Cox for the RBI, and Carson scored on a fielder's choice.

FHS added three more runs in the top of the fourth, breaking a 3-3 tie after NA scored three runs in the second.

In the fourth, Nathan Crabtree scored on a base hit by Chase Fulkerson, followed by a two-run inside-the-park home run by Bennett, also scoring Fulkerson. Bennett finished 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs.

In the fifth, FHS added their final two runs with Cox and Montgomery scoring runs off a double by Crabtree.

NA added two runs in both the fifth and six innings.

The pitching win was credited to Carson (1-1). He pitched six innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks. He struck out four batters.

Quintin Schaffer earned the save. He pitched one inning, allowing no hits or walks, while striking out one batter.

FHS will play again on Tuesday when they travel to West Union in an SHL game at 5 p.m.
