Lions sweep regular season series with Wildcats

MOWRYSTOWN — The 2011 regular season series between Highland County and Southern Hills League rivals Fairfield and Whiteoak belongs to the Fairfield Lions.  

The Lions scored at least one run in all but two innings to seal an 8-2 win over their Highland County foe, Thursday at WHS.

Fairfield improves to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the SHL.

Leading the Lions at the plate were Kyle Carson, Tyler Campbell, Cody Tolle and Cody Bennett, who each had two hits.

Carson was 2-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt and two RBIs. Campbell hit a double, with two RBIs, one run and one steal. Tolle finished 2-for-4 with a double, one steal and two RBIs. Bennett was also 2-for-4 with one run.

Nathaniel Miller gained his second win against the Wildcats on the mound this season. Miller pitched a complete seven-inning game, allowing two earned runs on four hits and six walks. Miller struck out nine.

The loss was charged to Gage Carraher of Whiteoak. The sophomore pitched 5 2-3 innings, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits and four walks. He finished with six strikeouts.

Gaining hits for the Wildcats were Michael Smith, Carraher, Jesse Bradds and Ryan Emery. Smith also forced two walks and had a stolen base for WHS.

The scoring for the Lions began in the first with one run scored by Ian Adams, who began the game with a walk. Adams scored on a ground out by Campbell.

In the third, the Lions took a two-run lead with Adams beginning the inning with a base hit. Adams took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Carson.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Lions added one run each, taking a 4-0 lead.

The fourth began with Jordan Boles hitting a lead-off single. Bennett moved Boles to second on a base hit, and Adams moved the runners to second and third on a ground out. After an out on a missed suicide squeeze attempt, the Lions scored on a base hit by Carson, allowing Bennett to cross home plate.

The Wildcats put one run on the board in the bottom half of the fourth, cutting the Lions' lead to two runs.

Carraher began the Wildcat fourth with a base on balls. Bradds followed with a single, moving Carraher to third. Carraher scored on an infield throwing error.

The Lions added their fourth run in the fifth inning, for a 4-1 advantage.

In the fifth, Campbell reached first on a lead-off single. After Campbell stole second, he scored on a base hit by Tolle.

Then came the four-run sixth by FHS, sealing the win.

Scoring for the Lions in the sixth were Adams, pinch runner Nathan Hawkins, Chase Fulkerson and Dakota Hargrave.

The final WHS run was scored in the bottom of the seventh, with Emery scoring on a single by Carraher.
 
FHS is scheduled for a 5 p.m. non-league game against Blanchester on Monday at Wilmington College. On Tuesday, FHS will host Peebles.
