Lions soccer falls at home to Williamsburg

LEESBURG — Hosting the Williamsburg Wildcats in a non-conference match, the Fairfield Lions battled tough in the heat on Wednesday but were unable to gain a win as they lost by a 3-0 score.
At halftime, the Lions trailed by a 2-0 score with the Wildcats scoring goals at the 38:14 mark and the 9:54 mark of the first half. In the second half, the visiting Wildcats scored their final goal with 15:44 left in regulation for the three-goal win over Fairfield.

As for the Lions, they did have a string of defense where they kept the Wildcats from adding more goals to their lead by taking on and overcoming the pressure of Williamsburg. Around the 35-minute mark of the second half, Williamsburg was putting heavy pressure on the Lions, but defense by Tanner Collins, Zach Ison, Hunter McIntosh, Cody Ayers and Brayden Grooms around that time frame of the match kept Williamsburg from adding to their lead.
Offensively, the Lions had pressure by Garrett Spargur on a few occasions.
FHS keeper Corey Allen made a save on a penalty kick attempt by the Wildcats with 17:00 left in regulation.
Next for Fairfield is a match against the Southern Hills Athletic Conference-leading Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 29.
