Lions play close; fall to Paint Valley

LEESBURG — Two runs in the third inning scored by the Fairfield Lions tied the game, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Paint Valley Bearcats at bay Wednesday night, with the Bearcats scoring their game-winning runs in the fifth for a 4-2 loss by the Lions.
In the Lions’ non-conference loss to the Bearcats of the Scioto Valley Conference, Fairfield trailed early on by a 2-0 score following a two-run home run by Drake Stanforth in the top of the first inning.
The Lions trailed by the two-run deficit until the bottom of the third when they rallied back to tie the score at 2-2 following a two-run inning of their own.
That score stayed pat until the top of the fifth when the Bearcats added their two go-ahead runs for the eventual 4-2 final score.
“Being a young team, we battled well,” FHS head coach Tony Haley said. “They hit a two-run homer in the first, and I thought, ‘Uh oh, that might hurt us,’ but our guys kept fighting. Of course, we came back and tied it up, then we had a misplayed fly ball, and that kind of hurt.

“Hats off to their guy, he pitched a great game. We didn’t get that many hits, but I think we are coming around, and hopefully we’ll be ready when the league starts.”
Paint Valley out-hit the Lions, 10-4 with PV committing one error, while the Lions committed two.
Pitching for the Lions was Cody Gragg, who made the start for FHS, pitching four innings. Pitching three innings of relief was Austin Setty. Gragg finished the game with three strikeouts.
The win was credited to Paint Valley’s Jay Riley, who finished with two strikeouts. RBIs by PV went to Stanforth and Baker.
At the plate for FHS, Randy Lamme had one RBI for the Lions.
“I liked the overall effort of the team, and they’re coming around as a team,” Haley said. “I hope it carries over, and we are getting well-pitched games, so hopefully we can build off pitching.”
