CHILLICOTHE — The start of the Fairfield Lions basketball season can easily be described as unlucky.

One night after dropping their season opener to the East Clinton Astros, in non-league play, the Lions had to play without their regular lineup, falling to the Vinton County Vikings, 75-50 at Zane Trace High School in the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic.

The Lions are playing without last season's leading scorer and senior leader Chris Cox, who was injured in the first half of the season opener at ECHS Friday night. Through three years, Cox is a 1,000-point scorer for the Lions.

On Saturday night, the Lions trailed 41-19 at the half.

The Lions were led by senior Cody Ferrell with 12 points.

In the third frame, FHS (0-2) had to battle off a 7-0 run by the Vikings (1-0) to start the half, as the Lions had three turnovers in the run. Ferrell stopped the run with two points.

After another layup in transition by the Vikings, Quentin Williams sank a 3-pointer for the Lions, followed with a block by Cameron Rolark. The Vikings answered with a 3-pointer.

Rolark took over for the Lions by draining a jumper and a 3-pointer to off-set a three-point play by the Vikings later in the quarter.

Austin Hildebrant followed with a jumper, and Ian Adams came up big defensively with a block and by drawing a charge.

The fourth quarter started with the Lions trailing 54-37, but Clinton Stebelton started off the fourth with two free throws for FHS.

Also scoring in the final frame for the Lions were Brandon Carmean, Dakota Hargrave and Ferrell. Ferrell scored six points in the final frame.

For the game, Rolark finished with nine points, followed by Carmean and Adams with six points each. Cole Putnam finished with five. Hargrave scored four, followed with Williams and Hildebrant with three points each. Stebelton had two points.

FHS will take the court against the Peebles Indians (at Peebles) on Dec. 10 in a Southern Hills League game.
