Lions fall 2-1 to Green Devils in home opener

In their home opener on Wednesday night, the Fairfield Lions were unable to defend their home field with a 2-1 loss against Southern Hills Athletic Conference foe North Adams.
The game wasn't without some controversy with one goal being called off (or never counted as a goal) for the Lions, with the keeper of the Green Devils being injured on the play as FHS kicked the ball into the net.
Play never stopped until FHS kicked the ball into the net, though the keeper was down at the time. After a brief huddle by the officials, it was decided there was no goal scored by the Lions, and the score stayed tied at 1-1.
As for those first two goals by the two SHAC foes, the Lions were first to score with junior Trey Current making it a 1-0 score with 34:16 left in the opening half.
"I thought there were times when we passed the ball well up front, and we communicated pretty well in some instances," FHS head coach Brian Ortlieb said.
Around six minutes later, the match was tied at 1-1 with Zack Reid of the Green Devils scoring the goal.

From there, the no-goal occurred at the 22:55 mark of the first half.
In the second half, the Lions had some nice saves by their keeper with heavy pressure by the Green Devils, but with 33:12 left, it was North Adams' Aaron Pertuset who put the ball past the FHS defense to ultimately gain the one-goal.
Ortlieb spoke about the biggest of the match.
"The biggest difference on our side was the defense," he said. "It was porous. We lost two major contributors on the back line and our goalie from last year to graduation, and our back line is trying to learn to work together.
"It has been a big learning curve so far, but even the back line at times came together to work well. It is just going to take a little time for them to gel."
FHS also had another goal called off on an offsides call later in the second half of the match.
The loss sends the Lions to a 1-1 overall record and 0-1 in the SHAC. In their season opener on Saturday, the Lions defeated Piketon, 7-0.
FHS is scheduled to play again on Friday when they host the Eastern Brown Warriors in SHAC play.
