Fairfield Lion boys varsity soccer coach Brian Ortlieb described it best by saying "my team showed a lot of heart."
The Lions scraped and clawed all 80 minutes, and in the end they put together enough offense, mixed with top-notch defense to defeat the Unioto Shermans 2-1 Thursday night.
Blake Hildebrant scored both goals for the Lions, putting them ahead 1-0 at halftime.
His first goal came at the 21:44 mark of the first half giving the Lions the aforementioned one-goal advantage after 40 minutes. Hildebrant was assisted by Ryan Bates from the right corner.
In the second half Unioto scored at the 21:05 mark on a penalty kick, after a trip in the box was called.
Fairfield took the lead with 5:32 left in regulation play with a goal by Hildebrant who was assisted by Austin Palmer.
Fairfield was, once again, called for a penalty in the box with 2:32 left to play, but the Shermans failed to convert.
FHS keeper Joey Wilson was credited with 12 saves in the game.
"Joey played a really solid match tonight as well as our back line," Ortlieb said." Our midfield did a good job of controlling play in the middle of the field as well."
