Lions drop district semifinal to Waterford

CHILLICOTHE — The Fairfield Lions and Waterford Vikings waited and waited for their Division IV SE District Semifinal game to start, and by the time a little before 10 p.m. rolled around at VA Memorial Stadium, the two teams were able to take the field.
For the Fairfield Lions, they were able to only tally one run as they fell to the Waterford Vikings by a 7-1 score to end their season at 15-8 overall and 1-1 in the postseason.
The Lions were coming off a 6-3 defeat of Peebles to reach the district round in Division IV of there SE District, but on Saturday night, once the first pitch was thrown, it was a tough night for the Lions. That first pitch was hit for a triple, and from there, the Lions were not able to overcome what was a two-run inning by the Vikings.
Later, the score went to 3-0 in favor of Waterford with a run in the top of the second off an inside-the-park home run with one out, as the Waterford batter hit the ball to right field and never let up on the bases, sliding head first into home plate, as that was one of the total 10 hits by Waterford in the contest.

Fairfield made it a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning as the lone run was scored by Mitchell Rose, who initially reached first base after being hit by a pitch with one out. He scored off an infield error by Waterford.
Waterford added a run in the fourth and three more runs in the sixth inning to complete the scoring for the game.
Sam Buddelmeyer was charged with the loss, as he pitched 4.1 innings, striking out seven. Austin Setty pitched two innings of relief, and Matthew Spears also pitched for the Lions in the seventh for two-thirds of an inning.
Gaining hits for the Lions were Buddelmeyer and Rose. Drawing walks were Hunter Dixon and Klay Walker.
Seniors this season for the Lions were Randy Lamme, Nike Hurless, Rose, Brad Bumgarner, Dixon and Wyatt Harris.
