Lions cross-country 5th at Watkins Memorial

The Fairfield boys cross-country team traveled to Watkins Memorial High School in Pataskala on Saturday, where they placed fifth overall with two runners, Wyatt Evans and Matthew Mangus, earning medals for placing in the Top 20.

Evans finished eighth, and Mangus was 18th.

Rounding out the other Fairfield runners were Noah Richmond, 26th; Trent Swisher, 45th; Nick Price, 58th; Dustin Willey, 68th; and Tucker Ayres was the seventh man, finishing in 77th place.

"Coach (Raymond) Friend and I put this meet on our schedule as an early season test with a young team to see how we measure up to potential regional opponents," FHS assistant coach Bill Mangus said. "We understand each and every runner and coach needs to improve over the next seven weeks in order to be successful at our regional race and advance to state."

The winning team was Mt. Gilead, followed by Fairfield Christian, Newark Catholic and Grandview Heights.

Fairfield defeated teams from Berne Union, Galion Northmor, Centerburg, Millersport, Worthington Christian, Fisher Catholic, Village Academy, Gilead Christian, Columbus Academy, Barnesville, Fairbanks, Grove City Christian, Crooksville, Bellaire St. John Central, Tree of Life and Elgin.

The team will next compete in the Aaron Reed Memorial Invitational at Southeastern HS in Chillicothe on Saturday, Sept. 13.
