EBER — The Fairfield Lions had to play without their leading scorer for the second consecutive game, so they buckled down, and played defense that led to to a 52-49 non-league win over the Miami Trace Panthers at the "Panther Pit" on Tuesday.
FHS (10-8) had to play for the second straight game without the services of Quentin Williams, due to medical reasons, but that was "ok" for the Lions.
Though FHS trailed 15-14 following the first quarter, 23-21 at the half and 35-32 after three quarters, the Lions didn't break ... as they outscored the Panthers 20-14 in the fourth frame for the victory.
"This was a good team win," FHS head coach Matt Carson said. "Defensively, we were good, and I'm always pleased if we hold our opponent to under 50 points.
"We had a lot of guys who did well doing things that don't show up on the stat sheet. Austin May and Austin Hildebrant played excellent defense."
[[In-content Ad]]Gage Montgomery continued his breakout season for the Lions. The sophomore scored 17 points, with seven two-point baskets, along with a 3-of-4 performance from the free-throw line.
Brad Clay and Cole Putnam each added 13 points. Elijah Carmean finished with six points (two fourth quarter 3-pointers), and Blake Hildebrant added three points.
Leading MT was Cedric Pettiford with 22 points.
"This was just an overall, all-around good team effort, Carson said. "I'm pleased with how we've responded since our game last Friday against Lynchburg-Clay."
FHS has two games remaining on the schedule, as they will host Manchester on Friday for Senior Night. On Feb. 17, the Lions will wrap up the regular season at West Union.
