Lions break out at plate for SHAC win over North Adams

LEESBURG — This week for the Fairfield Lions continued to go their way, as they’ve scored a total of 15 runs in two games this week, including an 8-0 shutout win on Tuesday against the North Adams Green Devils at FHS.
The Lions on Monday defeated the Manchester Greyhounds, 7-0 en route to the Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory, and the next day, FHS defended their home field with yet another conference win.
“We had a good game Monday against Manchester, and the past two days we’ve had well-pitched games,” FHS head coach Tony Haley said. “Hunter pitched well (Tuesday) with a complete game shutout. He threw a lot of strikes and wasn’t in trouble much. He pitched a whale of a game.”
FHS (8-4) began their scoring onslaught with five runs in the second inning, where the home teams scored those runs off a fielder’s choice and three base hits. Cody Gragg knocked in two of the FHS runs in the inning with a two-RBI single, while Klay Walker and Mitchell Rose each had an RBI single in the second inning.

From there, the Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth with RBI base hits by Rose and Tucker Ayres. Austin Setty scored the final run of the game, as he crossed home plate off a base hit by Rose for the eight-run lead.
Rose led all batters, finishing 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs. Gragg and Dixon each finished with two hits, as Gragg also collected two RBIs. The lone walk by FHS was forced by lead-off hitter Setty.
With one hit each in the game were Setty, Walker, Sam Buddelmeyer, Tucker Ayres and Mason Cain. Steals for the Lions were by Setty, Rose and Walker.
“We’ve been struggling lately hitting-wise, not getting the big hit, but just before the game I was like ‘let’s be aggressive, let’s start being aggressive,’ and the guys swung the bat really well,” Haley said. “We ran the bases pretty well. (Monday’s) effort was good to see, and we are pretty happy with it.”
Hunter Dixon was the winning pitcher for the Lions. Dixon went all seven innings, where he allowed no runs on three hits and two walks, as he totaled 86 pitches in the complete game.
The two teams will play again on Wednesday, this time at North Adams High School in a makeup SHAC game with a 5 p.m. start.
