Lions 3-peat as district champions

For the third straight season, the Fairfield boys cross-country team captured the SE District Championship first-place Division III trophy.  

The meet was held at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday, Oct. 19, a course that is particularly challenging with two very long, steep hill climbs.

Capturing the individual title and winning by 48 seconds was senior Michael Mangus with a time of 16:52.

He was followed by freshman Wyatt Evans in third place with a time of 17:42. In fifth was freshman Trent Swisher with a time of 18:16, and senior Blake Hildebrant finished eighth with a time of 18:33.[[In-content Ad]]

Hildebrant ran from the finish line to awaiting transportation to be taken to Jackson to play in the district semifinal soccer game, which Fairfield won.  

Junior Dustin Willey was 13th overall with a time of 18:43, and freshman Mason Cain finished in 18th place with a time of 19:32. In 26th was junior Matthew Leach with a time of 20:33.

Fairfield easily captured the title with a low score of 28 points to runner-up Eastern Brown with 70 points. There were 14 SE District schools competing.

For the fourth straight season, the cross-country Lions have advanced to the Region 11 Cross-Country Championship, held at Pickerington North High School in Pickerington. The team will compete on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:30 pm.  

The top four teams and 16 individuals will qualify for the state championship meet.
