Leesburg defeats Wendy's, 9-8, to win Hillsboro Babe Ruth Championship

Leesburg Babe Ruth and Wendy's lit up the scoreboard on Monday, July 20 as they combined for 17 runs.

In the end, Leesburg Babe Ruth won the offensive battle, 9-8, in six innings to claim the Babe Ruth Tournament Championship.

The teams combined for 13 hits, including seven extra base hits.

The game was back-and-forth heading into the fourth inning, with seven lead changes.

Leesburg Babe Ruth took the lead in the fourth inning and held on for the victory. A hit-by-pitch scored Nike Hurless and gave Leesburg Babe Ruth the lead for good.

Leesburg Babe Ruth would not relinquish the lead as Wendy's was unable to weather a four-run, fifth-inning deficit.

Wendy's scored three runs in the sixth on an error and a groundout by Baron. Still, Wendy's couldn't catch Leesburg Babe Ruth.

Hunter Dixon recorded the win for Leesburg Babe Ruth even though he allowed five runs over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered three hits.

Leesburg Babe Ruth's Tucker Ayres, Hurless and Ethan Cornwell combined for six hits and three RBIs.

Austin was charged with the loss. He lasted three innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed two runs.

The bottom of the first saw Wendy's take an early lead, 1-0. Austin kicked things off for Wendy's with a double. A stolen base then moved Austin from second to third.

Wendy's brought home three runs in the third inning, and matched that run total in the sixth. In the third, Wendy's scored on an RBI single by Austin, plating Alex.

The fourth spelled defeat for Wendy's, as Leesburg Babe Ruth grabbed the lead for good when Dylan Zimmerman put down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Hunter Dixon from third with the game tying run.

Great pitching leads Leesburg Babe Ruth past Cellular Solutions 2-1 in semifinal

An ace pitching performance by Ethan Cornwell spurred Leesburg Babe Ruth to a 2-1 win in six innings over Cellular Solutions that started on Friday and finished Monday. Three and 2/3 innings were played on Friday and the game was completed Monday in the Babe Ruth semi-final.

Cornwell got the win for Leesburg Babe Ruth with to 13 strikeouts. Cornwell allowed no earned runs on one hit and four walks over six innings.

Carraher was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted five innings, walked three, struck out 10, and allowed two runs.

Cellular Solutions' lone run of the ballgame came in the first inning on a groundout by Nace.

The game resumed on Monday with two outs. Lamme started the inning off with a walk, stole second on the first pitch and got to third on a passed ball, then scored on a batted ball by Tucker Aryes and a throwing error by Carraher.

Ayres reached third on a double by Ethan Cornwell. Ayres scored on a passed ball, which ended up being the game winning run.

The win put the Leesburg team in the championship game.
