Lady Mustangs victorious over rival Lady Lions

Lead Summary

LEESBURG – The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs prevailed Friday night at Fairfield High School, as they defeated county rival Fairfield 2-0, finishing off a season sweep of their Southern Hills League counterpart.

In their first game earlier this season the Lady Mustangs defeated FHS 4-0.

On Friday, the score was tied at zero after 35 minutes of SHL action, but it was the Lady Mustangs who took charge in the second half for the win.

“We had a very even first half as both teams struggled to score,” Lynchburg-Clay coach Dennis West said. “We picked up our play in the second half.”

L-C broke the scoreless tie in the second half when sophomore Karen Hilt scored on a free kick that traveled 22 yards to the net with 31:15 left in the final 35 minutes.

Sophomore Brooke Hertlein netted the second L-C goal with 6:31 remaining in the game as she scored near the Fairfield keeper for the 2-0 advantage.

L-C junior keeper Shelbi Halverson had three saves in the 70 minute game. Each half was shortened to 35 minutes due to daylight hours.

FHS senior keeper Gabby Boone had seven saves.

The Lady Lions took seven shots at goal, while L-C had three.

“This was a good win for us against a county rival,” West said. “Fairfield always plays us tough.”

L-C improves to 5-4-0 overall, 2-3-0 in SHL play.
