Lady Lions win, defend home court on Saturday vs. Paint Valley

Saturday (Dec. 7) saw the Fairfield Lady Lions defend their home court at Grandle Gymnasium in convincing fashion, winning by a 73-43 score against visiting non-conference foe Paint Valley.
The win by the Lady Lions showcased their skills in a big way as seven players from their varsity roster all reached the scoring column, with four players reaching double-digit scoring.
Fairfield’s leading scorer was Madison Bronner with 20 points, as the sophomore totaled 10 two-point baskets, including three different quarters where she had multiple baskets for the home team.
FHS got off to a strong start with a 22-point first frame with points by Ella Newkirk (four), Peyton Magee (six), Hailey Tolle (six), Bronner (four) and Braylynn Haines (two).
Having a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Lions really got things going in the second frame as they scored 30 points in the eight-minute span. The Lady Lion defense held PVHS to 14 points for a 52-25 halftime advantage.
Fairfield’s second quarter included seven points by Newkirk (including one 3-pointer), five points from Emma Fouch (one 3-pointer), Magee with four points, Tolle with two points and Cadence Saunders with two points. Also in the second frame, Fairfield had eight points by Bronner and two points off a basket by Haines.
The Lady Lions added 13 points in the third frame with five points off a 3-pointer and two-point basket by Fouch, six points from Bronner (three two-point buckets) and a two-point basket by Newkirk.
With the game in control, FHS scored eight points in the fourth quarter with three points from Magee, two points each by Saunders and Bronner and a free-throw conversion by Haines.
Final scoring totals for the Lady Lions, following the aforementioned 20-point game by Bronner, included 13 points each by Newkirk and Magee and 10 points for Fouch.
The remainder of the final scoring for the Lady Lions included eight points by Tolle, five points from Haines and four points off baskets by Saunders.
For the game, the Lady Lions totaled 31 two-point field goals, three 3-pointers (two by Fouch, one by Newkirk) and they were 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Paint Valley was led in scoring by Angel Proehl with 12 points, making four 3-pointers. Abbi Stanforth finished with nine points, and Olivia Smith ended the game with eight points.
The win moves the Lady Lions to 6-1 overall on the season.
