Lady Lions volleyball advances to sectional finals

LEESBURG — It took less than an hour for the Fairfield Lady Lions to move onto the Division IV Southeast District Sectional Finals with a semifinal sweep of the Sciotoville East Tartans, Monday night at Grandle Gymnasium.

The Lady Lions trailed very little against the No. 11 seeded Lady Tartans in any of the three sets played. They controlled the tempo of the entire volleyball match, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-5 and 25-13.

“I was happy with the second set, but on the other two we could have played better,” FHS head coach Megan Young said. “We played well, but could have played a lot harder."

On Monday night, the Lady Lions began by jumping out to a 3-1 lead with points from Kaiti White and Kami Magee.

“Kaiti’s serving power was consistent, and Hannah Putnam’s hitting was on. She had some good kills,” Young said. 

FHS continued to build on their lead, then really broke away from the Lady Tartans. That began by having an 11-point lead and improving it to a lead of 22-4 with serves from White, along with help from Putnam. White in the 12-point scoring streak had at least five aces.

The Lady Tartans rallied late in the first set, but eventually FHS scored the three points they needed for a 25-14 win, with the 23rd point coming from Mallory Nestler. The 25th point came from Ciara Knisley.

The second set was pretty much pure domination by the Lady Lions with serves from Magee and a point at the net from Knisley for a 5-0 lead. Later, the lead went to a 7-1 advantage with an ace from Blake Adams.

FHS continued to gain points with the serving by Carli Reiber as the Lady Lions built a 20-3 lead. From there, Putnam had a kill at the net for the 23rd point. The final point in the second set for the Lady Lions came with a kill by Adams.

Fairfield won the third set by 12 points, though the set was the toughest of the three played with there being ties at 3-3, 6-6 and 7-7. FHS took the lead with a block at the net by Briana Barnes for a 8-7 lead. FHS kept at it and went ahead by a 13-9 score.

Barnes, White and Lauren Arnold helped extend the Lady Lions’ lead to 16-9. As the third set continued, the Lady Lions took a lead of 19-11 with a point at the net from Barnes. The third set and the match ended with a kill by White for the 25-13 final score.

The win by the No. 6 seeded Lady Lions moves them to the sectional finals on Thursday, Oct. 20 at No. 3 seeded New Boston at 6 p.m.
