The Fairfield Lady Lions returned to Southern Hills Athletic Conference play Thursday as they defeated the Ripley Lady Blue Jays, 17-2.
The Lady Lions’ bats were as hot as the weather on the banks of the Ohio River, as the Lady Lions totaled 20 hits.
Fairfield's (7-5, 4-1 SHAC) offense broke out their team slump in a big way, led by Shelby Smithson with three hits and five RBIs. Kaitlin Evans added three hits, three runs, two RBIs and four steals.
Ten different Lady Lion hitters had hits on the afternoon, as the Lady Lions' victory, coupled with a 13-3 victory by the Eastern Lady Indians over the Fayetteville Lady Rockets, puts FHS and Fayetteville in a tie for first place in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference for Division II.
FHS trailed 2-1 after the first inning, as they put three singles together in the top of the inning. Scoring the run was Grace Larrick. Ripley (1-4, 2-6) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first on singles by Bowling and Hawkins.
The Lady Lions batted around the order, scoring seven runs in the top of the second. In the inning, Sirenity Smith doubled, Shaylee Carson singled, Evans had an RBI single, Larrick singled and Smithson tripled to drive in two runs.
The inning continued with Halie Chain singling in a run, with Cynnamon Sova-Davy having an RBI single. Justice Hattan doubled to drive in a run, and Smith collected her second hit in the inning, a single to centerfield.

FHS added a run in the top of third inning and another seven runs in the top of the fourth. In the fourth, Heather Sanderson doubled, Hattan singled and Carson singled to drive in a run. Evans singled, and Larrick continued the inning with a walk. Smithson singled to drive in two runs, and Chain tripled to drive in two runs.
The Lady Lions scored a final run in the top of the fifth, with Sova-Davy singling to begin the inning. Courtney Hodson was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Mikayla Coleman singled to centerfield. Evans grounded out to knock in Hodson.
Arica Melson posted her seventh win on the season. Melson (7-2) pitched five innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on seven hits and two walks. She finished with six strikeouts. Morgan Wright (2-5) suffered the loss for Ripley.
The Fairfield Lady Lions play next on Tuesday when they travel to Mowrystown to play the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
