Lady Lions top visiting McClain

LEESBURG — There were 15 goals scored from a combined four players, but in the end, it was the Fairfield Lady Lions who doubled the scoring of visiting McClain, winning the intra-county matchup by a 10-5 score Monday at FHS.

For the Lady Lions, it was senior Kaitlin Evans scoring six goals and sophomore Carly Arnold scoring four times.

"(Monday) was just our forwards playing their positions well," FHS head coach Sam Spargur said. "Carly is playing well, and she'll have even a bigger role on this team next season.

"Kaitlin wanted to dominate this game, and she played very well."

For McClain, sophomore Taylor Polley scored four goals, and teammate Natalie Butterbaugh had one goal.

In the first half, FHS led 6-2, with Arnold and Evans each scoring three goals for hat tricks. Polley had one goal in the first half for MHS, as did Butterbaugh.

In the second half, Polley and the Lady Tigers cut the FHS lead to just two goals after scoring a goal at the 38:15 mark, followed by her third goal and the hat trick at the 36:25 mark of the second half.

Evans added a fourth goal to her individual total with 35:41 left in the match, beating the defense of MHS.

Polley scored her fourth and final goal with 30 minutes left on the clock, and from there, it was Evans making the score 8-5 with her fifth goal around the 20-minute mark.

With 6:00 left in the match, Arnold scored goal No. 4, and the final goal came with 2:55 on the clock by Evans.

The FHS defense kept MHS scoreless for the final 29 minutes.

"Our defense came on at the end and played well," Spargur said.

MHS head coach Shawn Peterman spoke about his team's performance on Monday.

"We struggled a bit on the technical portion of the game," he said. "We had some bad touches, and they had some pretty good runs on us. We had difficulty keeping (Evans) marked man-to-man and not allowing her to get through on us.

"We are a green team, and we are rebuilding. There are still things we need to improve on as the season goes on. Hopefully we finish it out on the plus side and go back at it in our next game."
