Lady Lions top LC in rivalry game

The Fairfield Lady Lions opened their 2015 season with an 11-4 victory over Highland County rival Lynchburg-Clay at FHS on Tuesday.

The first inning was close as both teams combined for seven runs, with FHS leading after the first at 4-3.

Following the first, FHS added three more runs in the second for a 7-3 lead. LC answered with one run in the third, but the Lady Lions answered with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

FHS out-hit the Lady Mustangs, 10-6, as LC also committed four errors and FHS had one.

Justice Hattan led FHS with a 3-for-3 game at the plate with one run and two RBIs. Shaylee Carson was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Carson also walked once.

Grace Larrick didn’t record a hit, but walked three times and scored three runs in the FHS win.

Also with two hits was Heather Sanderson for the Lady Lions with one run and three RBIs. Kaitlin Evans recorded one hit and one walk, while also adding two runs and one RBI.

Arica Melson and Kourtnie Smith also added one hit each with Melson having three RBIs. Carly Arnold drew a walk and scored one run.

For LC, Lexi Waits and Hannah Binkley each had two hits, with Waits scoring one run and Binkley collecting one run and three RBIs.

With one hit each for LC were Chelsi Hacker and Hayley McConnaughey. Hacker scored one run, and McConnaughey tallied one RBI.

Melson was the winning pitcher, with the senior pitching all seven innings. Melson allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk. She struck out seven and faced 28 batters.
