Lady Lions run-rule Whiteoak for second straight season

MOWRYSTOWN — It didn’t look like the Fairfield Lady Lions last took the field for a game 10 days ago due to inclement weather and field conditions, but on Thursday, they finally were able to return to the field and continued from where they left off over a week ago.
For the second consecutive year playing at Whiteoak, the Lady Lions defeated the Lady ’Cats via run-rule on their field, this time by a 13-0 score in six innings with an onslaught of runs in the latter innings of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference showdown.
If one needs to look at where the Lady Lions were dominant on Tuesday, it just wasn’t with their bats, but from the circle as freshman pitcher Kaitlin White (7-0) was on point and on target yet again as the first-year varsity player pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and no walks in the shutout. She hit one batter and ended the game with 12 strikeouts, including one called third strikeout.
“It was a good team win, we are still young and coming along, and Kaiti White is throwing the ball well,” FHS head coach Mark Dettwiller said. “It is tough getting mentally ready after not having a game for 10 days, but it starts right after school before we got onto the bus.”
The two Whiteoak players who gained hits were Ashleigh Harless and Chelsea Chisman, who each went 1-for-3, both hitting singles in the second and third innings. Lexi Jones reached bases after she was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, while Courtney Gross and Jaycie Parr each reached first base on an error, with Parr taking to the bases twice via errors.
Now for the Lady Lions offense, one that put up a total of 13 runs on 11 hits and eight walks. They also took to the bases three times on errors.
“I was impressed with how even though we didn’t put the ball in play hard the first time around, our kids adjusted the second time through and made plays,” FHS assistant coach Tom Purtell said. “Our defense has to be mentally ready on defense, because a lot of balls aren’t put into play with the strikeout totals we have, so they have to be ready as well, and they were.”
FHS scored five runs in the third inning, followed that with a three-run fifth and put the game away with five more runs in the top of the sixth to seal the win.

Carli Reiber, Emily Williams and Kourtnie Smith each had two hits, with Reiber finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and one run and two RBIs, while Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Williams ended the day 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Finishing with one hit each were Grace Larrick, White, Lauren Arnold, Shania Setty and Lyndee Spargur, with White and Spargur each hitting a double. Larrick walked, scored a run and had one RBI.
Arnold walked once and scored a total of three runs. Spargur scored two runs, collected three RBIs and walked once. White and Setty each had one RBI.
Also for the Lady Lions, Casey Carter walked and scored a run and Macinzey Harvey drew a walk. Larrick and Williams each had a stolen base.
FHS left four runners on the bases and Whiteoak ended the game with six left on base.
The loss moves Whiteoak to 1-7 overall, while Fairfield is now 7-2 this season.
