Lady Lions open season with shutout win over Lynchburg-Clay

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lady Lions opened their regular season Wednesday the same way they spent most of their games during last season’s regional run … with a victory. The Lady Lions controlled all aspects of their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game against the visiting Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, winning via a 10-0 run-rule victory after five innings.
Besides the 12 hits by the Lady Lions, they were also led by the pitching of sophomore Kaiti White, who dominated in the circle against the Lady Mustangs. In five innings, White allowed no runs on two hits and no walks. She struck out eight batters and faced just 17 batters in the conference game.
“Kaiti threw a two-hit shutout and threw the ball really well (Wednesday),” FHS head coach Mark Dettwiller said. “Both hits allowed weren’t hit hard.”

The Lady Lions were led at the plate by the 1-3 batters in the order in Sherry Heckathorn, Carli Reiber and White and the fifth batter in the order Lyndee Spargur, who each finished with two hits. Eight FHS batters finished with at least one hit in the game.
Leadoff batter Heckathorn was 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Reiber finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. White was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs, and Spargur finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one walk.
“We hit the ball fairly well today, too,” Dettwiller said. “We had 12 hits, and the girls are still learning and getting better.”
FHS scored three runs in the first inning, followed by a two-run second, three-run fourth and two-run fifth inning.
Totaling one hit each were Emily Williams (two runs, steal), Lauren Arnold (one run, one RBI, one walk), Shania Setty and Megan Gragg (two runs, one walk, one steal). Hitting doubles for FHS were Reiber, White and Arnold.
LC’s two hits were by Serah Whitacre at 1-for-2 and Amber DeBoard at 1-for-2. Whitacre was charged with the loss in the circle. She allowed 10 runs (five earned) on 12 hits and two walks. She finished with one strikeout.
