Lady Lions move to 9-0 on the season; blank Fayetteville

The most recent champions of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference (Division II) met on Wednesday, but this year the Fairfield Lady Lions and the Fayetteville Lady Rockets are having opposite seasons.
This time around it was the Lady Lions (5-0, 9-0) who defended their home field, defeating the visiting Lady Rockets, 9-1
The loss drops Fayetteville to 2-2 in the SHAC and 2-6 overall.
[[In-content Ad]]Fayetteville won the championship last season, while Fairfield was the runner-up. FHS won league titles in 2011 and 2012, while Fayetteville was the runner-up.
On Wednesday, FHS jumped out to 2-0 lead, but Fayetteville cut the lead to a single run 2-1 in the third inning.
The Lady Lions took the advantage for good with a five-run fourth inning, en route to their eight-run win.
Arica Melson picked up her seventh win of the season, giving up a single earned run, while scattering three hits, and one walk.
Melson struck out nine.
The Lady Lions' defense was described as "great," but the offense was impressive, tallying 11 hits.
Melson hit for herself for the first time this season, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Also for the Lady Lions, Shelby Smithson was 3-for-3 with a home run, sacrifice fly, two runs and four RBIs.
Grace Larrick went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Kaitlin Evans, Shaylee Carson, Heather Sanderson and Kourtnie Smith all had one hit. Sanderson scored one run and had two RBIs. Smith's hit was a triple, as she scored two runs.
Fairfield returns to SHAC action, Thursday as they host the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats at 5 p.m.
