Lady Lions host ‘Volley for the Cure’ match; fall to Peebles in 5 sets

The Fairfield Lady Lions hosted their annual “Volley for the Cure” match on Monday night against visiting Peebles at Grandle Gymnasium.
There were many activities supporting the cause at FHS with both teams taking part in pregame events, and as for the match itself, it went the distance with Peebles winning the event in five sets to gain the Southern Hills Athletic Conference win.
The match was full of excitement and play that saw five very close sets. PHS won the first set by a 25-21 score, but the Lady Lions answered to even up the match score with a 25-20 win in the second set.
Peebles regained the lead with a 25-22 third set victory, but the Lions didn’t give up with a set four win of 25-20. In the fifth and final set (the winner was the first to 15 points), the Lady Indians of PHS won by a 15-8 score.

As for the second set won by the Lady Lions by five points, it was tied on six occasions, including late in the set at 19-19, and that was due to points scored by junior Ciara Knisley off consecutive kills, including one at the top of the net.
Also in what was a FHS rally (they trailed at one point by a 17-10 score) was excellent serving from sophomore Lauren Arnold. FHS won the second set with the 24th point scored by senior Hannah Putnam and the final point scored off a hit from sophomore Kaiti White.
In the fourth set, the Lady Lions won by a 25-20 score again, with it only being tied once at 3-3. The Lady Lions led that match most of the way and never trailed after breaking the 3-3 tied score.
Set four included a point at the net from sophomore Brianna Barnes to make it at the time a 6-4 advantage. Later in the match, Knisley of the Lady Lions had an ace for an 18-11 lead. From there, junior Blake Adams put FHS ahead 22-14, and the 24th point was scored by senior Shelby Turner with an ace.
The final point had to wait through a six-point rally by PHS, but FHS eventually won the fourth set with a play at the front row of the net by Knisley.
In the tie-breaking set, Peebles never trailed, with the score tied once at 1-1. Other than that, the Lady Indians controlled the set to win the match by a 3-2 score and the final set by seven points.
