Lady Lions gain SHAC win over Peebles

One day after a disappointing loss to the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors that saw their 33-game conference winning streak come to an end, the Fairfield Lady Lions traveled to Peebles and won by a 4-0 score on Friday.
The Peebles Lady Indians (4-1, 2-1 SHAC) finished second in the SE District Tournament one season ago and figure to finish as one of the top teams in the conference this season, but Fairfield’s victory was truly impressive with Kaiti White and the Lady Lion defense shutting out the Peebles team, allowing only hit while striking out nine batters.

The Lady Lions had eight hits on the afternoon, including a fourth-inning home run by Lauren Arnold.
Fairfield’s Carli Reiber reached first on an infield single in the first inning but failed to score a run. Both pitchers retired their opponents in order in the second inning.
Fairfield got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the third inning. Megan Gragg led off the inning with a solid single to centerfield. One out later, Lyndee Spargur was safe on a bunt single. Reiber loaded the bases on a bunt single, and White stepped to the plate and doubled to the fence in left field to score Gragg and Spargur as Reiber took third base.
The Lady Lions added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Arnold led off the inning and forced a full count from Peebles’ Madison Pierce fouling off several pitches. Arnold finally got the pitch she wanted and launched a deep fly ball over the centerfield fence for a home run.
Molly Thackston followed with a base hit to short centerfield. Following an out, Madison Fox laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Thackston to second base. Spargur was safe on a bunt base hit to advance Thackston to third base, but a throwing error on the play scored Thackston and moved Spargur to second base.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Peebles gained a leadoff single by Brycelyn Short. Pierce laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Short to second base, and a groundout to third baseman Ashley Sanderson advanced Short to third base. White and the Lady Lions defense had other plans as they slammed the door as Kylie Sims flied out to left fielder Fox.
That was the only base runner that Peebles had all game, as White and the Lady Lions defense retired 21 of the 22 batters sent to the plate, including nine by strikeout.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions were Spargur (2-for-4, one run), Reiber (2-for-4), White (1-for-3, double, 2 RBI), Arnold (1-for-3, home run, one run, one RBI), Thackston (1-for-3, one run) and Gragg (1-for-3, one run).
White (4-1) was the winning pitcher, pitching seven innings. She allowed one hit, no runs, no walks and had nine strikeouts.
Madison Pierce (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season for Peebles, finishing with four strikeouts.
The Fairfield Lady Lions will host the North Adams Lady Green Devils on Monday at 5 p.m. Their game vs. McClain on Saturday was canceled due to weather.
