Lady Lions fall to Waverly to begin season

The Fairfield Lady Lions had a tough first half scoring just 14 points. They were unable to get back into contention during their season opener Friday evening at the Paint Valley Lady Cats Classic, falling to the Waverly Lady Tigers, 47-36 in non-conference play.

FHS (0-1) scored seven points in each of the first two quarters, while the Lady Tigers (1-0) scored 14 points in the opening frame, then came back with another 11 points in the second quarter for a 25-14 halftime lead.

In the opening half, Grace Shope scored four points for the Lady Lions, finishing the game with a team-high 15 points. She tallied a double-double by forcing 11 steals. She missed the final six minutes of the game by gaining her fifth foul in the fourth quarter.

Also in that first half, Carly Arnold sank a 3-pointer, while Trinity Huff, Brianna Barnes and Blake Adams also scored points. Adams also finished with a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Barnes finished with a total of six points and seven rebounds.

In the second half, the Lady Lions scored 10 points in the third and 12 more points in the fourth. Waverly answered with an eight-point third frame and 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Waverly was led in scoring by Kim Knight and Larken Smith with 13 points each. Morgan Wiseman followed with nine points.

The Lady Lions were 13-of-59 shooting, including going 2-of-18 in the first quarter. From the free-throw line they went 8-of-13. Waverly was 4-of-10 with their free-throw shooting.

Next for the Lady Lions is a non-conference game on Nov. 30 at East Clinton. Their first home game will be on Dec. 1 vs. Eastern Brown.
