Lady Lions fall to Southeastern

LEESBURG — Though the Fairfield Lady Lions were able to gain the lead in the early stages of the third frame, they were unable to keep the lead or gain the non-conference win Saturday afternoon, falling to the Southeastern Lady Panthers, 65-56 at Grandle Gymnasium.
The Lady Lions battled tough early on as they used a mix of defense and offense to build a 12-5 lead following the first frame, trailing just once in the first quarter.
In the first frame, after allowing the first point of the game on a free throw, the Lady Lions took their first lead with a jumper at the 7:10 mark of the quarter by Kaitlin Evans.
Following a 2-2 tied score, Heather Cox scored the remainder of the points for FHS in the first frame, eventually building a seven-point lead for the Lady Lions at 12-5.
The end of the second frame saw each team with 24 points apiece as Cox and Evans had all the Lady Lions' scoring in the first two quarters with 12 points each.
For the game, Cox led all scorers with a game-high 31 points, a career-high. Evans followed with 16 points, including two 3-pointers in the second frame. Evans tallied 10 points in that second frame.
"Heather and Kaitlin played good games," FHS head coach Chad Hamilton said. "They (SE) took away the entry pass to Heather, but she was able to get her shots with offensive rebounds. That's how she got her shots."
[[In-content Ad]]FHS built a 28-24 lead with 7:10 left in the third off a put-back basket and fast-break points by Cox.
After SE responded with seven straight points and a 31-28 lead with 5:30 left on the clock, the Lady Lions never led again as they trailed 42-35 after three quarters.
"The difference was the third quarter … they (SE) outworked us," Hamilton said. "They outworked us, especially on the rebounding side … they took advantage of our breakdowns on defense.
"Our defense was good overall, but a spurt in the third we had those breakdowns."
The defense of the Lady Panthers continued to keep the Lady Lions out of the lead in the fourth, even with FHS scoring 21 points in the final eight minutes, while the offense of SE scored 23 points.
Leading SE in scoring was Haley Hice with 23 points.
SE was 21-of-33 from the free-throw line, while FHS was 16-of-26.
Scoring points for FHS in the second half were Carly Arnold (2), Lydia Sowders (3), Haley Bobb (3) and Justice Hattan (2).
The Lady Lions' game on Monday at Paint Valley in non-conference play has been postponed.
