Lady Lions dominate Fayetteville en route to SHAC win

LEESBURG — Fairfield dominated on defense, and their offense was a powerful force as well on Wednesday night, as the Fairfield Lady Lions won on their senior night by defeating the Fayetteville Lady Rockets, 5-1.
Fairfield was led by three players who scored goals in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference match, including two goals from senior Lyndee Spargur, two goals by freshman Ella Newkirk and one goal from freshman Cadence Saunders.
“Offensively, I am pleased with tonight,” FHS head coach Sam Spargur said. “The offense is starting to work well together. I think they are starting to read each other now late in the season.”

Fairfield began their scoring with a goal from Spargur with an assist by Saunders at the 34:00 mark of the first half, as all five Fairfield goals were scored in the opening 40-minute half.
Next came an unassisted goal from Saunders at the 28:00 mark for a 2-0 lead.
The ensuing two goals were from Newkirk as she scored her first goal of the match at the 26-minute mark of the first half with no assist, followed by her second goal of the evening at the 21:00 mark of the opening half with an assist by Saunders.
Fairfield’s fifth and final goal came with 7:00 left in the first half as Spargur netted her second goal with the assist by Newkirk.
At keeper for Fairfield, senior Trinity Huff totaled eight saves, including five in the first half and three in the second half. Also for FHS, junior Molly Thackston finished with four saves in the second half.
“We’ve been struggling all season on defense, and tonight the girls stepped up and did very well on the defensive side,” Spargur said. “Hailey Daniels stepped up, Lydia Williams has been playing very well defensively and Trinity Huff has been doing very well at goal and had never played there until this year.
“We have others who we sub in and out, and they do their part as well. Everyone is doing very well.”
For the game, the Lady Lions totaled 27 shots at goal with 11 shots in the first half and 16 in the second half.
Seniors honored before their game were Spargur and Huff.
“Lyndee has been playing mid-field the past few years, but this year we moved her to a forward position and she’s stepped up,” Spargur said. “She’s stepped up very well in a scoring position. Trinity Huff at goalie has had several saves and took on the new role this year and has played well.”
