Lady Lions break away in 2nd half to defeat McClain

LEESBURG — Being able to score three goals in each half was what the Fairfield Lady Lions needed to gain a season-opening win on Monday night, as those six goals were double the amount allowed to the McClain Lady Tigers for a 6-3 win at FHS.
Fairfield and the Lady Tigers were separated by one goal after the first 40 minutes of play, only to see the host Lady Lions outscore the Lady Tigers 3-1 in the final 30 minutes, with the match being called with 10 minutes to go due to darkness.
“We had kind of a slow start out because (Taylor Polley) was dangerous to us, but once we adjusted the second half and figured out how to capitalize on our shots and make things happen, the second half went a lot better for us,” FHS head coach Paij Shelton said. “We had strong defense today, and overall it was a good win.
“We had connecting passes and a curveball because the offsides trap from (McClain) was dangerous for us, but we adjusted to it.”
The first goal for the Lady Lions came early in the first half with 36:56 on the clock with Shay Turner sending the ball to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The match went to a two-goal lead for the Lady Lions with Carly Arnold scoring a goal with 29:01 on the first-half clock.
FHS (1-0) took a three-goal advantage with Rylie McKinley adding to the lead at the 20:10 mark of the first half.
McClain didn’t fold … instead, senior Taylor Polley scored two straight goals for the Lady Tigers at the 19:20 and 16:52 marks, cutting the FHS lead to one goal by the time the first half came to a close.
In the second half, McClain had one final goal, with Polley gaining the hat-trick with 13:00 for the final goal of the match.

Before that goal, the Lady Lions had three goals in the second half, with Turner gaining her second goal with 25:49 left on the clock, followed by goals by Abby Newkirk (16:45) and Arnold (14:10) to finalize the scoring of the Lady Lions.
MHS (0-1) had two goals that nearly went into the net with attempts around the 26:00 and 23:00 marks that bounced off the top cross-bar.
The next game for the Lady Tigers (1-0) will be on Tuesday (Aug. 23) as they host the Wilmington Hurricane in South Central Ohio League play. MHS will follow that with another SCOL match on Thursday (Aug. 25) vs. Clinton-Massie with both games being played at McClain Field.
The Lady Lions (0-1) are scheduled to play again on Tuesday (Aug. 23) in a non-conference match at Southeastern. On Friday (Aug. 26), they will play in their Southern Hills Athletic Conference opener at Peebles.
