HILLSBORO — One lone goal by the North Adams Lady Green Devils ended the 2010 season for the Fairfield Lady Lions at Richards Memorial Field, Monday.
FHS fell to the Lady Green Devils, 1-0.
In a SE District Division II Sectional tournament game switched to RMF from the soccer field at Fairfield High School, due to scheduling conflict, the Lady Lions pressured NA for a majority of the game, but in the end were unable to score a single goal.
FHS ends the season with a 4-12 overall record, and a 3-4 mark in the Southern Hills League during the regular season.
The lone aforementioned goal was scored by NA sophomore Mikayla Downs, who made a spectacular goal off a cross kick by sophomore Ashley Taylor with 15 seconds remaining in the first half.
FHS had opportunities to score, especially in the second half, as they pressured NA near their goal, getting off shots, but they went too wide, too high or were stopped by the keeper of the Lady Green Devils, just inches away from tying the game.
The Lady Lions had the ball in the final 24 seconds, near their own goal, as the Lady Green Devils' defense wouldn't allow the Lady Lions to cross midfield as the clock ticked down to zero.
"We shot the ball several times, but just couldn't get a real good look at the net," Fairfield coach Russ Boone said. "We gave up a heartbreaking goal. We thought we had it stopped, but it trickled in."
Boone said following the match this would be his final game as the Lady Lions' coach.
Boone said his team was hit with the injury bug as the tournament began.
"We only had 11 players the past two games," he said. "The girls played hard, and this loss wasn't for lack of effort. The North Adams goalie was in position to stop us and did a nice job."
FHS will say goodbye to seven seniors, including: Kylie Bates, Heather Huff, Danielle Butler, Dora Grooms, Shelby Mahorney, Lindsey Tolle and Mary Stout.
"The girls worked very hard this season and I am very proud of the seniors," Boone said. "They played hard all four years I coached them, and I am very pleased and proud I got to coach them."
