Lady Lions blast Ripley

Lead Summary
The Highland County Press-
RIPLEY — The Fairfield Lady Lions pounded out 12 hits, seven for extra bases, as they defeated the Ripley Lady Blue Jays, 13-1 in a Southern Hills League game in Ripley.

Because Ripley’s softball field was underwater from flood waters of the Ohio River a couple of weeks ago, the softball game was played on the baseball field.
Whitney Hanenkrat and Shelby Smithson led the Lady Lion’s power show with two triples each.

"All four triples would have been home runs, if played on a standard softball field," FHS assistant coach Tom Purtell said.

Heather Huff, Danielle Butler and Courtney Huff each contributed doubles to the Lady Lion offense.

Lauren Larrick led the Lady Lion defense, limiting the Lady Blue Jays to just three hits while striking out 13 batters in the five-inning game.

Again, the Fairfield Lady Lions offense got off the bus swinging.
Heather Huff led off the game with a bunt single and stole second base, her first of five stolen bases on the afternoon. Butler walked, and one out later, Hanenkrat tripled over the centerfielder’s head to drive in both runners. Kortney Paris singled to right field, scoring Hanenkrat. Shelby Smithson tripled into the right-center field gap, scoring Paris and giving the Lady Lions a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Blue Jays scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning on a hit batter, two singles and one error.

That would be all the runs the Lady Blue Jays would get, as Larrick and the Lady Lions defense shut the door on the Lady Blue Jay offense. RHS would see only two runners reach base the remainder of the league game.

FHS increased their lead, scoring a run in the top of the second inning on singles by Butler and Abby Thackston.

The Lady Lions added another seven runs in the top of the third inning on a triple by Smithson, a single by Jade Shelton, back-to-back doubles by Heather Huff and Butler, a sacrifice fly by Thackston and a triple by Hanenkrat.

The Lady Lions completed their scoring with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Courtney Huff doubled and scored on a ground out by Butler.

Leading hitters for the Lady Lions included Hanenkrat (2-for-4, two triples, two runs, two RBIs), Smithson (2-for-3, two triples, one run, two RBIs), Heather Huff (2-for-3, double, two runs, five steals), Butler (2-for-3, double, three runs, two RBIs), Thackston (1-for-3, two RBIs), Paris (1-for-1, two runs, one RBI), Shelton (1-for-2, one run, one RBI) and Courtney Huff (1-for-1, double, one run).

Larrick (6-0) was the winning pitcher for Fairfield. She went five innings, allowing three hits, one run (none earned) and no walks.[[In-content Ad]]
