Kaitlin Evans hat-trick leads Lady Lions to season-opening win

The play of Fairfield senior Kaitlin Evans was turned up a notch on Wednesday, as she collected a hat-trick and the Fairfield Lady Lions gained a season-opening 4-1 win on their home field.
The victory for FHS shows how far the program has come in one year, because the Lady Lions lost a tough match at NAHS last season near the start of the schedule.
This season, the Lady Lions have 23 players.
"We played them early last season, and the girls were wanting to get the season started with a win, instead of how we played against them (NA) last year," FHS head coach Sam Spargur said. "We played much better this year and I'm proud of their effort.
"We have more kids on the team this year, and that helps as well."
For the Lady Lions, all their goals were scored in the second half, with the halftime score reading all zeros.
Evans began her attack on the goal of the Lady Green Devils with 37:27 left in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference match by putting FHS ahead 1-0.
Nearly four minutes later, Fairfield sophomore Abigail Newkirk kicked a lengthy goal with 33:21 for the two-goal advantage.

The lead of the Lady Lions then went to 3-0 as Evans scored on a 30-plus yard kick straight past the keeper of North Adams with 13:43 left in the match. She got the opportunity at the uncontested kick towards the goal after a high-kick penalty on the visiting Lady Green Devils.
NAHS followed by scoring their lone goal with 10:12 on the clock.
Evans, an All-Ohio selection last season, gained her hat-trick with a final goal with 1:57 left in regulation.
"Kaitlin is tough," Spargur said. "She's quick and dedicated."
Spargur also spoke about the team and their overall performance.
"Our forwards worked very well," he said. "Our mid-field is a lot stronger."
FHS will play again on Friday as they host Eastern Brown.
