Kaiti White hits towering home run in Fairfield sectional semifinal win over North Adams

LEESBURG — Playing in the Division III sectionals for the first time after dominating in Division IV for numerous seasons, the Fairfield Lady Lions had the same result as those previous seasons, this year by defeating an opponent from the Southern Hills Athletic Conference.
The Lady Lions — who have played three games in the past four days — defeated the visiting North Adams Lady Green Devils by a 10-0 score Tuesday night, and in doing so advanced to the sectional finals this Friday at Fairfield High School as they’ll face No. 6 seeded Piketon, who won over Adena, 3-0.
Fairfield (17-6) in their sectional semifinal game against the Lady Green Devils scored four runs in the first inning, then tacked on three runs in the second and followed those runs with innings of one run in the third, fourth and fifth for the 10-run win.
“We hit the ball very well today, and Kaiti (White) threw the ball extremely well,” Fairfield head coach Mark Dettwiller said. “North Adams put the ball in play more than I expected. Coach Shannon had them ready to go.
“We were fortunate enough to squeak out 10 and come out on the good side, so any win is a good win. We try to schedule some of the bigger schools around and try to prep for the tournament.”
In all, Fairfield totaled 14 hits, including a home run by Kaiti White in the first inning that hit the bus garage at Fairfield for the towering two-run shot over the centerfield fence, while also scoring Lyndee Spargur. Also scoring runs in the first were Layla Hattan and Lauren Arnold for the 4-0 advantage.
In the second inning, Fairfield had runs scored by Carli Reiber, Hattan and Arnold for the 7-0 lead with an RBI single by Molly Thackston in the inning.
The next three runs scored were by Madison Fox in the third, Thackston in the fourth and Spargur ending the game in the fifth with the final run scoring off a single by Reiber.
In the 14 hits by the Lady Lions, Reiber was 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Having two hits each were Spargur (2-for-4, two runs), Arnold (2-for-2, two runs, one walk, one RBI) and Megan Gragg (2-for-3, one RBI).
“Carli smashed the ball today with three hits and had a sacrifice as well,” Dettwiller said. “We had a few girls who hit the ball really well today.”
Gaining one hit each were White (two RBI, two runs), Hattan (one run, two RBI), Taylor Lawson (one RBI, one walk), Thackston (one run, one RBI) and Fox (one run).
The two hits by North Adams were from Alaina Eiterman and Macey Jarvis. Lexie Inskeep forced a walk for the Lady Green Devils.
White (16-5) pitched five innings for the win, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk. The junior finished with nine strikeouts and faced a total of 19 batters.
“Kaiti pitched well and hit one off the bus garage too. That was a shot,” Dettwiller said.
Jarvis was charged with the loss for North Adams. In four innings she allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 14 hits and two walks, striking out one batter.
Fairfield will host Piketon on Friday at Fairfield High School with a start time of 5 p.m. in the sectional finals.
