Grace Shope nets 1,000th career point; Lady Lions win at Manchester

It took Fairfield junior Grace Shope under three full seasons to become just the third Fairfield Lady Lions basketball player to reach the 1,000-point scoring plateau. She did so in the third quarter Saturday afternoon, as FHS defeated Manchester, 68-36 for a road conference victory.
Shope finished the game with 27 points, including four 3-pointers, five two-point baskets and a 5-of-7 performance from the free-throw line. All of her points were scored in the first three quarters, and three of her four 3-pointers came in the third frame. Shope also totaled nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The junior scored nine points in the opening quarter, followed by seven points in the second frame (including a 3-pointer) as the Lady Lions led 32-11 at halftime. In the third frame, Shope sank the aforementioned three 3-pointers and a two-point field goal.
The FHS scoring record is held by Heather Cox, who totaled 1,199 points in her four-year career. She gained the record in 2014. The first FHS girls basketball player to reach 1,000 points was Kay Cummings in 1982. She finished her career with 1,054 points.
Fairfield dominated their Southern Hills Athletic Conference foe for the entire game, leading 17-6 after the first frame. Besides the nine points from Shope in the first frame, Blake Adams and Carly Arnold each added three points for the Lady Lions (Arnold made a 3-pointer) and Brianna Barnes scored two points in the same opening frame. Adams totaled 10 points and six rebounds in the win, while Barnes had six.
In the 15-point second quarter for FHS, not only did the defense hold Manchester to just five points, but Trinity Huff added five points to the FHS totals, and Ashley Sowards sank a 3-pointer. Huff finished the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Having a 21-point lead entering the third frame, the Lady Lions not only saw Shope gain her 1,000th point in the third, but also had scoring from Huff with two two-point baskets, a 3-pointer from Chloe Barber, three points by Adams and Barnes with two points.
In the fourth frame, the Lady Lions added 13 more points to their final scoring total as Abigail Newkirk scored two points, Carli Reiber made a free throw, Huff and Adams each added four points and Barnes made another two-point basket.
For the game, FHS was 9-of-21 from the free-throw line, while connecting for seven 3-pointers and 19 two-point field goals.
Leading Manchester was Darrington White with 12 points, including one 3-pointer, four two-point field goals and one free throw conversion.
