Fairfield’s Ciara Colwell wins ’16 Ohio Classic

HILLSBORO — Fairfield’s Ciara Colwell raced in her first Ohio Classic at the varsity level on Saturday afternoon at Liberty Park in Hillsboro. The freshman racer defeated 77 other runners to take home the top spot, winning by nearly a minute over the second-place finisher.
Colwell raced to a championship time of 21:21 in Hillsboro on Saturday, defeating the second-place finisher junior Tara Todd of Waynesville, who had a time of 22:13.
The Lady Lions placed third overall as a team, scoring 85 points. In first place was Waynesville (36), and in second was Blanchester (56). Host Hillsboro placed seventh out of nine teams with a score of 172.

In 11th place for FHS was junior Chloe Barber at 23:47, and in 18th place was sophomore Megan Gragg at 24:28, giving Fairfield three runners in the Top 20.
In 26th place was sophomore Alexis Swisher (25:14), and the 38th-place spot went to freshman Sarah Wuellner at 28:00.
Also for the Lady Lions, times included: junior Sarah Young (29:29), junior Andrea Spears (29:41), freshman Laynee Duffie (29:57), sophomore Haylee Lowe (30:04), senior Haleigh Bates 31:43), sophomore Meadow Cunningham (32:05) and freshman Alexis Tompkins (34:14).
“I was pleasantly surprised that the girls team took home a trophy with a third-place finish,” Fairfield cross-country head coach Raymond Friend said. “Ciara, Megan, Chloe and Alexis all raced well, and our team is only going to get better as the team progresses.”
Hillsboro had one runner in the Top 10 in senior Caitlin Ahrmann with a time of 23:42. Teammate Emily Young, a junior, finished in 35th place at 27:15.
Hillsboro’s other times included: freshman Keeley Schurman (28:20), junior Liahna Brown (29:48) and freshman Alora Brown (30:45).
