Fairfield wins on homecoming against Fayetteville

The Fairfield Lions defended Grandle Gymnasium on homecoming by defeating the Fayetteville Rockets, and in the process earned a Southern Hills Athletic Conference win by a 74-62 score, Friday.
Fairfield (2-3, 7-4) led by six points when the first quarter came to a close, leading by an 18-12 score, as that frame included half of the 18-point frame coming from Bryson Simmons with nine points.
The rest of the first-frame scoring came from four points by Connor Priest, two points by James Bentley, two points from Tytis Cannon and one point by Wyatt Willey, as his defense stood out in the game by holding the season-leading scorer of Fayetteville to under his average at 10 points.

Simmons finished the game with 30 points to lead the way. Bentley was next in scoring with 17 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double.
The Lions were outscored 24-18 in the second, with the score being tied at 36 when halftime arrived. Simmons was on point again in the second with another nine points, including a 3-pointer. Reese Teeters sank a 3-pointer in the frame, and also in the quarter, Priest scored four points and Bentley tallied two points.
Priest finished the game with 12 points.
Fairfield had a 21-point third frame, while the Rockets scored 15 points for a 57-51 lead for the Lions. In the third, Simmons sank a 3-pointer and scored seven points, while Bentley battled his way to three baskets for a six-point quarter.
Cannon scored four points in the third, and scoring two points in the third were Willey and Priest. Cannon ended the game with a total of seven points, and Willey totaled five points.
When the fourth quarter closed, the Lions had added 17 more points, with Bentley scoring seven points, Simmons having five points, Willey and Priest each adding two points to the FHS total and Cannon scoring one point in the final frame.
Fayetteville (2-4, 4-7) scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. For the game, they were led by William Cornett and Jaxson Malone with 12 points apiece. Also in double-figure scoring for Fayetteville was Levi Wiederhold with 11 points, and with 10 points each were Blake Coffman and Christopher Murphy.
The Rockets finished the game with 12 two-point field goals, 10 3-pointers and they were 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. The Lions collected 24 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and they were 17-of-25 in their free-throw shooting.
Next for the Lions is a home game on Tuesday, Jan. 14, as they will be hosting the first-place Peebles Indians in SHAC action.
