Fairfield wins by 1 run over Lady Green Devils

Twenty-eight days after the game began, the Fairfield Lady Lions returned to North Adams High School Monday afternoon to complete a game suspended by heavy rains on April 16. The Lady Lions eventually scored a run in the seventh inning, earning the Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory by a 1-0 score.
On April 16, the Lady Lions (9-4, 12-9) and the Lady Devils (1-9, 3-10) were locked in an old fashion pitcher's duel. Fairfield’s ace Arica Melson threw five innings of one hit shutout softball, while freshman Jade Spriggs threw six innings of two hit shutout softball before the rains suspended play.
FHS wraps up SHAC play with the win, where they finish runners-up in Division II of the conference.
[[In-content Ad]]The game resumed play in the bottom of the sixth inning, Monday, with Melson quickly retiring the first two batters, but allowing a walk to Fite. The Lady Lions' defense rose to the occasion as second baseman Grace Larrick made a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of Ashley Taylor to end the inning.
FHS wasted no time in the top of the seventh inning, scoring the lone run of the game.
Heather Sanderson, with one out, blasted a triple to the fence in left field. Cynnamon Sova-Davy executed the Lady Lions' small ball game to perfection laying down a sacrifice bunt scoring Sanderson, when the throw went to first base giving the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
North Adams Lady Devils made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh.
Melson struckout the first batter of the inning, but allowed a walk to Anslee Creech. Hannah Whited was safe on an infield hit advancing Creech to second base. Melson answered with a strikeout of the next batter for the second out of the inning.
Veronica Young forced a walk load the bases with two outs. With the bases loaded, Melson ended the game with a strike out of the next batter.
Kaitlin Evans led FHS at the plate going 2-for-2. Sanderson was 1-for-3 for the lone hits by the Lady Lions.
Melson (12-6) picked up the win for FHS. She pitched all seven innings, allowing no runs on two hits and five walks. Melson struck out 13 batters.
Spriggs suffered the loss for NA. She also pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk. She finished with 10 strikeouts.
FHS will prepare for tournament play with two South Central Ohio League opponents this week, the Miami Trace Lady Panthers at home on Wednesday and the McClain Lady Tigers on the road on Thursday.
The Lady Lions will play in the postseason on Saturday, May 18 when they host the winner of Green and Manchester at 11 a.m. at FHS in a sectional final game.
