Fairfield volleyball keeps it close; falls to Fayetteville

LEESBURG — All three sets were close for the Fairfield Lady Lions when they hosted the Fayetteville Lady Rockets on Tuesday evening at Grandle Gymnasium, but the visitors were the ones who took home the conference victory, winning in three straight sets over the Lady Lions.
Fayetteville won over the host Lady Lions by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19 in their Southern Hills Athletic Conference contest, and in the first set alone there were a total of 10 tied scores, followed by one tie in the second set and five ties in set three.
The most competitive set for the SHAC match was set one, where it was Fairfield who took the early lead by a 4-2 score with help from junior Autumn Baker, junior Lauren Arnold and senior Ciara Knisley.

Later, the match — which earlier was tied at 1-1 — became tied again at 4-4 and 5-5, with Fairfield junior Kamryn Magee breaking the 4-4 tied score by adding a point to the home side of the scoreboard.
After Fayetteville took the lead, FHS tied the score, first with junior Brianna Barnes spiking the ball over the net for the Lady Lions, followed by Fairfield tying the score at 8-8, then again at 9-9. Fayetteville answered by building a 12-9 advantage, but the Lady Lions didn’t back down, battling their way to tying the score at 12-12, taking the lead at 13-12 with an ace from Magee, then seeing the score tied at 13-13.
The two teams continued to play tough against each other, with FHS getting to within a point of the Lady Rockets off an ace by senior Saylor Priest, and again later at 18-17 with strong help from Knisley. Barnes tied the score at 18 with a big play at the net, but the Lady Rockets answered again with three straight points and a lead of 21-18, forcing FHS to call a timeout.
Fayetteville added to their lead following the timeout for a 22-18 advantage, but FHS had another rally remaining, tying the score at 22 with an ace from sophomore Ally Davis, play at the net by Barnes and another ace by Davis for a 22-22 score. This time Fayetteville called a timeout, then took the lead at 23-22. FHS tied the score yet again at 23, but the visiting Lady Rockets were too strong in the end, scoring the final two points for the 25-23 set one victory.
The Lady Rockets never trailed in the second set, but that didn’t mean the score wasn’t close throughout the SHAC encounter. Fayetteville controlled the pace of set two early, taking a 9-4 advantage, but a block at the net by Barnes, an ace by Davis and later a kill by Arnold left the score at 11-7, still in favor of the visiting team.
Knisley later had a block for Fairfield and Magee brought the Lady Lions back to within two of Fayetteville at 12-10, but a strong rally of scoring by the Lady Rockets left the score at 16-11 in favor of Fayetteville.
Later in the match, Davis had a kill, as did Knisley, and freshman Layla Hattan scored a point by pushing the ball over the net, bringing the Lady Lions again back to within a point of their opponents at 17-16.
Fayetteville eventually built a 21-19 lead as the second set continued, but senior Blake Adams made it a one-point scoring differential with a kill for the Lady Lions at 21-20. With the score at 22-20, Davis had a timely dig that resulted in a point scored on a block by Barnes to make it a one-point games. On the next serve, Davis tied the score at 22-22, forcing the Lady Rockets to call a timeout. The plan worked for Fayetteville as they scored the next three points following the break in action for the 25-22 score.
Four times in the second set, the Lady Lions were within one point of Fayetteville.
The third set was tied five times at 1-1, 3-3, 4-4, 10-10 and 11-11 as the Lady Lions had help from Adams with an ace, Barnes with a kill and an ace from Davis to keep the score close during that time frame of set three.
