Fairfield sweeps McClain Opener to begin 2017 season

The Fairfield cross-country program, in both middle school and high school, took home the top honors Wednesday by sweeping the 2017 McClain Opener cross-country meet at Mitchell Park in Greenfield.
The Fairfield boys high school varsity team had a perfect score of 15 in their win against five other schools, while the FHS girls varsity team was first with a score of 34 over four other teams.
In the middle school event, the Lions boys were first with a score of 27, and the Fairfield girls middle school team was first as they competed against Miami Trace.

Going back to the high school boys event, the Lions had the Top 8 spots and nine of the Top 10 finishes.
Winning the event was Noah Richmond at 15:59 at the Mitchell Park course, and in second place was Matthew Mangus at 16:25. Next for the Lions were Austin Setty in third (16:40), Bennett Hodson in fourth (17:04) and Cohen Frost in fifth place at 17:05.
The rest of the Top 10 included Ethan Davis of FHS sixth at 17:07, Andrew Davis of FHS seventh at 17:14, Hunter Morgan of Whiteoak in ninth at 17:34 and in 10th place was Sam Buddelmeyer of FHS at 17:40.
McClain’s top finisher was Reece Schluep in 11th place at 17:57, and the top finisher for the Hillsboro Indians was Bailey Lucarello in 12th at 18:04.
In all, there were 64 high school boys runners in the event. As for the final team totals, following the Lions was Miami Trace in second place with 91 points. From there, the results included: Hillsboro (100), Whiteoak (108), Washington (113) and McClain (150).
The girls event saw FHS win by 26 points, as they scored 34 in the victory. Next were Washington (60), Hillsboro (68), Miami Trace (84) and Whiteoak (105).
Fairfield had four of the Top 10 finishers, with Ciara Colwell in second at 20:09. The girls high school event was won by Maddy Garrison of Washington at 19:21.
In third was Fairfield’s Morgan Richmond at 21:05, followed by Molly McCreary of HHS at 21;25 and in fifth place was Kylie Pettit of Miami Trace at 22:08.
The rest of the girls high school Top 10 included: Chloe Barber (FHS, 22:09), Haley Copas (WCH, 23:15), Megan Gragg (FHS, 23:31), Ellie Howland (HHS, 24:01) and Keeley Schurman (HHS, 24:22).
In the boys middle school race, the winner was Reese Teeters at 11:44 for the Lions. The middle school girls winner was Raelynn Ruble of Whiteoak at 13:18.
