Fairfield softball tops Lynchburg-Clay

DODSONVILLE — The Fairfield Lions wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard Tuesday night, and with that, they made their mark at Lynchburg-Clay by gaining a Southern Hills Athletic Conference win by a 12-1 score in five innings via run-rule.
The Lady Lions scored three runs in the first inning and followed that with a two-run second, another three runs in the third and ended their scoring with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
“It was a good team win, and our younger kids are maturing and coming into how we play the game, buying into it and coming along. We have a long way to go, but it was just a good team win,” FHS head coach Mark Dettwiller said.
In the first inning, Grace Larrick and Kaitlin White both scored on a single by Emily Williams. Williams then scored on a groundout by Kourtnie Smith for the three-run advantage.
Those were all the runs FHS needed, but they built a cushion with insurance runs in the top of the second with Sherry Heckathorn and Larrick each crossing the plate off a throwing error in the infield.

The third inning saw Lyndee Spargur score a run on a single off the bat of Heckathorn, then she added to the lead with a run as she was batted in by Larrick, who hit a single. Larrick scored a run off a base hit by Carli Reiber.
In the top of the fifth inning, Larrick rounded the bases off a single from Williams, while Smith batted in Reiber and White. The final run of the game crossed home plate when Williams scored off a ground out by Lauren Arnold.
For the Lady Lions, Larrick, Williams, Smith, Arnold and Heckathorn each finished with two hits. Williams and Smith each had three RBIs.
Lynchburg-Clay’s lone hit was from Chelsi Hacker, an RBI single that scored Hannah Binkley with two outs.
White was the winning pitcher for the Lady Lions, tossing a one-hitter en route to her sixth victory of the season, as the freshman is now 6-0 overall. She allowed one run, unearned, on the one hit and no walks. She finished with four strikeouts as she faced 17 batters.
“Kaitlin pitched well, giving up just one hit, and she’s throwing the ball really well,” Dettwiller said. “She had a good day.”
The loss was charged to Lauren Meddock, as she allowed just four earned runs in the loss in five innings pitched. She also struck out two batters.
