Fairfield Lions win boys track & field SHAC championship

DODSONVILLE — The Fairfield Lions conquered the 2016 edition of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Championships on Friday evening, becoming champions of the conference in the boys meet at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
The Lions boys team scored 135 total points in the event, finishing with three first-place finishes, five second-place finishes and they came in third place four times. The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs were second in the boys with 102 points, and the Whiteoak Wildcats, also of Highland County, placed sixth out of 10 schools with 42 points.
For the victorious Lions, their boys team gained wins in the 4x800-meter relay, 3200m run and 4x400m relay events.
In the Lions’ wins, the 4x800m relay team of Matthew Mangus, Trent Swisher, Noah Richmond and Brandtson Duffie had a combined time of 8:48.11, winning the event by 31 seconds over second-place Manchester.
The 3200m run was won by Mangus with a time of 10:12.00, and the Lions won the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:54.28, with a team consisting of Wyatt Evans, Wyatt Fent, Bennett Hodson and Zachary Bolender.
The Lions also placed second and third in the 110m hurdles, second in the 4x200m relay, third in the 1600m run, third in the 4x100m relay, second and third in the 300m hurdles, second in the 800m run and second in the 3200m run.
For Fairfield in the 110m hurdles, their second-place finisher was Nate Buchanan at 18.92, and third in the event for FHS was Garrett Spargur at 19.91. The second-place 4x200m relay team of Dustin Huff, Randy Lamme, Nick Price and Devon Haynes had a time of 1:41.99. In the 1600m run, FHS had a third-place time of 4:42.95 from Noah Richmond.
Fairfield’s 4x100m relay team of Yancy Wisecup, Devon Haynes, Nick Price and Wyatt Fent had a time of 48.80, while in the 300m hurdles the Lions had a second-place finish from Garrett Spargur (48.65) and in third place was Nate Buchanan at 48.78. The 800 run saw Trent Swisher place second with a time of 2:07.64, and in the 3200m run, Dillon Burley was second at 10:48.92.
FHS also collected seven combined fourth- and fifth-place finishes in their win.

LC finished in first place three times, and the Whiteoak Wildcats had three first-place spots, all by Derrick Ison. Ison won the 100m dash (11.59), the 400m dash (52.14) and the 200m dash (23.43).
For LCHS, their first-place finishes came in the field events with Johnny Lewis winning the discus with a throw of 134-08, while Zac Carter had two first-place finishes, including the high jump at 5-10.00 and the long jump at 19-10.75.
As for the LC Mustangs, in second and third place in the boys events, they were third in the 4x800m relay at 9:32.67 with the team of Brandon McCammon, Ben Bales, Bobby Merry and Hunter Underwood. Zac Carter was third in the 100m dash for LC at 11.84, and the 4x100m relay team of Austin Balon, Dustin Back, Noah Scott and Zac Carter was second with a time of 48.76. Noah Scott was also second place in the 400m dash at 56.40.
The Mustangs were second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:59.84 with a team of Brandon McCammon, Bobby Merry, Noah Scott and Austin Balon. Johnny Lewis was third in the shot put with a throw of 39-00.00.
WHS had a second-place finish from Shane Elliott in the high jump at 5-04.00.
In the girls events, LC was second with 146 points, followed by Fairfield in third at 89 points. Also from Highland County, the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats were eighth with 21 points. Winning the girls conference title was Eastern Brown with 152 points.
The Fairfield girls totaled two first-place finishes, including starting off the track events with a first-place time of 11:33.00 in the 4x800m relay with a team of Chloe Barber, Alexis Swisher, Dakota Haynes and Maggie Donahue.
Blake Adams won the shot put for the Lady Lions with a throw of 33-11.50.
The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs had three first-place finishes, six second-place spots and three finishes for third place.
In their first-place finishes, the 4x400m relay team of Alexa Cochran, Abby Blankenship, McKayla Binkley and Angela McLaughlin combined for a time of 4:43.21. Bailey Leininger was first in the discus throw at 121-04, and McKayla Binkley won the high jump at 4-08.00.
WHS had one first-place finish coming in the 400m dash, as Taylor Tackett raced to a time of 1:03.76.
Gaining second- and third-place finishes for FHS were the 4x400m relay team of Chloe Barber, Alexis Swisher, Samantha Shepherd and Ciara Knisley at 4:59.00 and a second-place finish was earned in the high jump for FHS by Ciara Knisley with a jump of 4-06.00.
The Lady Mustangs of LC had six second-place spots in the conference championships, including their 4x800m relay team of Emily Pinkerton, Shelby Chisman, Mia McCammon and Audrey Merry for a time of 11:33.00. LC was second in the 4x200m relay race with a time of 1:56.10 as Alexa Cochran, Lexi Waits, Abby Blankenship and Taiyler Marcelino raced the event.
LC was also second in the 4x100m relay in the girls events with Taiyler Marcelino, Lexi Waits, Alexa Cochran and McKayla Binkley finishing with a time of 55.71. Angela McLaughlin was second in the 400m dash at 1:04.43, and Abby Blankenship was second in the 300m hurdles at 51.54. Angela McLaughlin was also second in the 200m dash at 27.58.
The LC third-place finishes came from Angela McLaughlin in the 100m dash at 13.24, Bailey Leininger in the shot put with a distance of 31-01.25 and Lexi Waits in the 3200m run with a time of 14:01.20.
