Fairfield Lions roar on the road in win over Paint Valley

With a very strong offensive performance in the first half, mixed with a stifling defensive performance in the final two quarters, the Fairfield Lions gained a road win Tuesday by defeating the Paint Valley Bearcats, 67-41.
In the non-conference showdown between the Southern Hills Athletic Conference (Lions) and the Scioto Valley Conference (Bearcats), it was Fairfield who held the advantage in the first half with a 22-11 first-quarter lead, and when halftime arrived — following a 21-13 second quarter — the Lions held a 43-24 advantage.
For the Lions (2-0) in the first frame, they had scoring from Reese Teeters, Tytis Cannon, Wyatt Willey, Bryson Simmons, Connor Priest, Tucker Watson and James Bentley.
Simmons led all scorers with 29 points in the non-conference win, including 10 two-point baskets and three 3-pointers. Priest followed with 12 points for the Lions, making five two-point field goals, and he was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Simmons in the first had one 3-pointer and three two-point baskets, while Willey sank a 3-pointer, and the others each scored two points in the opening eight minutes.
In the second quarter, Simmons exploded with 10 points, including two 3-pointers, while Priest scored five points in the second frame. Teeters, Caleb Payne and Watson each added two points in the second quarter.
When the second half was complete, the Lions defense is what stood out, with the unit holding the Paint Valley squad to nine points in the third frame and eight points in the fourth quarter.
As for the Fairfield offense in the second half, the third frame had five points from Priest, four points from Simmons and a two-point basket by Bentley.
In the fourth frame, Simmons added six points, Cannon sank a 3-pointer, while Teeters and Bentley each scored two points.
For other final scoring for the Lions, Teeters and Bentley each scored six points for the game, while Cannon finished with five points and Watson had four points in the win.
Wiley finished the game with three points, and Payne rounded out the scoring with two points in the nonconference victory.
FHS finished with 24 two-point field goals, along with five 3-pointers, and they were 4-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Paint Valley was led in scoring by Cordell Grubb with 16 points, making six field goals and finishing 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Cole Miller finished the game with nine points for the Bearcats, going 7-of-9 from the free-throw line and making one two-point basket.
More final scoring for the Bearcats included seven points from Cruz McFadden, thee points by Adam Brauner, and two points each by Jackson Williams, Traedon Jeffers and Dax Estep.
PVHS finished with 12 two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and they were 14-of-23 in their free0throw opportunities.
Next for the Lions is a SHAC game on Friday, Dec. 6 on the road at the Peebles Indians.
