Fairfield Lions place 2nd at Cedarville

The Fairfield Lions placed second at the annual Cedarville Friendship Invitational in the Division II/III race Saturday morning.
FHS was second with a score of 94, while first place went to Springfield Shawnee with a score of 88. The Lions were the top-placing Division III school in the race.
“I was really pleased about how our team responded this week after not racing well in Mason last week,” FHS head coach Raymond Friend said. “Last week, we got beat by 60 points by a Division II team in Carroll High School. This week at Cedarville, we had some younger runners step up, and we beat them.
“We had six runners under 18 minutes with two of our top runners out of the race. Noah Richmond is really running well with a sub-17 time. Matthew Mangus had a good race, and I look for him to get better and better. Bennett Hodson had a phenomenal race, and he keeps surprising me. Both Austin and Trent had very solid races, and freshman Ethan Davis is pushing all of them by getting better every week.”

Leading the Lions in a race of 355 runners was junior Noah Richmond with a time of 16:51.6. Next for FHS was junior Matthew Mangus at 17:22.5, and in 22nd place overall was sophomore Bennett Hodson at 17:30.4.
In 26th place overall was sophomore Austin Setty at 17:32.9, and in 28th place was senior Trent Swisher with a time of 17:38.6.
The 41st overall spot went to freshman Ethan Davis at 17:56.3, and in the 61st spot was junior Andrew Davis with a time of 18:23.1. The 83rd-place spot went to junior Nick Price at 18:44.7, and he was followed by senior Dillon Burley in 94th place at 18:54.1. The 115th-place spot was earned by sophomore Sam Buddelmeyer with a time of 19:16.4.
Also running for the Lions were freshman Gavin Campbell (20:45.1), freshman Tristan Victor (20:53.5), freshman Trey Wilkerson (22:57.2) and freshman Derek Cooper (25:38.5).
The Lions had an average time of 17:24 and totaled an overall time of 1:26:56.
In the girls race, the Lady Lions were 12th place, led by freshman Ciara Colwell at 20:24.3, as the race consisted of 289 runners.
Also racing for the Lady Lions was sophomore Megan Gragg at 22:41.5 in 68th place, and in 103rd place was junior Chloe Barger at 23:30.0.
Other times for the Lady Lions runners included: sophomore Alexis Swisher (24:19.4), sophomore Hayleigh Lowe (26:36.3), sophomore Meadow Cunningham (27:09.9), freshman Sarah Wuellner (27:46.8), junior Sarah Young (28:40.2), freshman Ailean Duffie (29:01.1) and senior Haleigh Bates (30:34.0).
“I was also really impressed by the girls team,” Friend said. “I think if we keep getting better, we can win the league at the end of the year. Ciara Colwell had another great race. Megan Gragg and Chloe Barber also got their personal best on this race course. Both of them have been putting in really good workouts in practice, and it is showing up in the races.”
