Fairfield Lions earn share of Div. II SHAC baseball championship

The Fairfield Lions baseball team ended their 2017 season on a winning note Friday night by defeating the North Adams Green Devils, in a makeup game at FHS, with a 2-1 score, clinching a share of the Division II Southern Hills Athletic Conference championship.

Fairfield saw their tournament run come to a close earlier in the week, but they returned to the field on Friday to clinch a share of the SHAC title by scoring runs in the first and fourth innings. This was the Lions' first SHAC baseball title since 2014.

The Lions share the SHAC title with the Fayetteville Rockets, with both teams finishing 9-4 in the conference.

FHS (9-4, 11-8) scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with leadoff batter Austin Setty reaching base with a single. Setty followed up by stealing both second and third base. Klay Walker batted in Setty with a one-out base hit on a 2-1 count for the 1-0 lead.

The Green Devils answered in the top of the fourth by tying the score with a run, but the Lions had other plans by taking what was the final lead of the game with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

This time, Walker led off the inning by taking two bases on an error. He stole third base and scored on a ground out to second base off the bat of Sam Buddelmeyer for the RBI.

Setty was the winning pitcher against the Green Devils. He pitched all seven innings, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits and no walks. Setty struck out one batter, ending the game with 64 pitches.

In all, the Lions totaled four hits with Setty, Walker, Buddelmeyer and Mason Cain each having one hit.

Seniors in their final game for the Lions were Walker, Cain and Jacob Bowman.
