Fairfield Lions drop opener to Washington

Baseball returned for the Fairfield Lions on Monday as they hit the road and faced the Washington Blue Lions. In the battle of the Lions it was the host Blue Lions who gained the win, defeating Fairfield, 4-2 in Washington Court House.
Fairfield left nine runners stranded on the bases in their season opener, but of those nine base runners, six were left in scoring position.
“I was very pleased with the way we played against a very good Washington Court House team,” Fairfield head coach Jeremy McGraw said. “We had our chances, but we just could not come up with that timely hit. Of the nine runners we left on base, six of them were in scoring position.
“Matthew Spears did a great job on the mound, and our defense backed him tonight as well, as we did not commit an error.”
FHS (0-1) trailed 2-1 at the conclusion of the first inning and the scoring was quiet until the fifth inning when the Blue Lions scored a run for a 3-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Fairfield added their second run of the game, but Washington was able to equal the feat with a run in their half of the sixth for the eventual 4-2 final lead.
Fairfield finished the game with nine hits as Wyatt Willey led the way at 3-for-3 with one RBI. Cody Gragg was next at 2-for-4 with one run.
Matthew Spears, Andrew Dingy (one run), Sam Buddelmeyer (one RBI) and Griffin Irvin each had one hit.
The loss on the mound went to Spears who pitched six innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks. Spears finished the game with six strikeouts.
